Bamboo is not a tree or a plant but classified as a grass. Its growth is rapid, and it is estimated that one hectare of Bamboo can yield up to 60 tonnes of this abundant primary resource a year. Producing bamboo for different purposes is therefore cost-effective and sustainable, as this grass has a very good yield per hectare. With these characteristics in mind, one can understand why farming this grass does not pressure the region for extensive and damaging land extensions. Twice as good as trees It is important to note that Bamboos are not uprooted during harvest which means soils are preserved and soil erosion prevented. Indeed, during harvest, when the bamboo trees are cut, the farmer leaves 1/3 of the plant’ high to allow this grass grow back at a rate of 1 meter a week. This farming method naturally prevents deforestation which is an ongoing problem in many parts of the world.
